Honeywell has made a name for itself when it comes to portable ACs. I have used many Honeywell products over the years, but the MN10CESWW is by far my favorite. It is a great product that has stood the test of time. It is ideal for a small to a mid-sized room. The unit is packed with some great features that make it one of the leaders in the portable AC market. Here are some features that make it so successful.
One of the best features of this portable AC from Honeywell is the design. The unit sports a bucker-free auto evaporation design. This means that you will not have to remove the condensate from the bucket every few hours. It is a great feature for people living in high humidity areas.
The AC can work non-stop for days without any need to replace condensate. The system has an integrated dehumidifier that can eliminate 68 pints of moisture per day from your room. That is some serious power.
The unit also has a slim profile that can fit in the tightest spaces. I also like the white color, although it does gather some dust.
With the cooling capacity of 10,000BTUs, the Honeywell packs in quite a punch. I have it set up in a room that is about 300sq.ft. And I have no issues with the cooling. I can get the room cool within about 7-8 minutes. I reckon this unit can handle even a 400sq.ft. Room, although I haven't tested it myself.
The installation is also easy. There is no assembly required for the AC itself. However, you will have to place the dehumidifier hose out of a window.
The AC uses proprietary ‘3-in-1’ technology to filter the air. At the heart of this filtration process is a high-quality 3M electrostatic filter.
The noise from the AC never reaches more than about 55 decibels. I prefer low noise while sleeping and this unit never gave me any issues.
The fan has three speeds; low, medium and high. Although the speed is not very high even at the highest setting, I found it reasonable.
- Great design and build quality
- Powerful 10,000BTU compressor
- Easy to install and maintain
- Bucket-less design with self-evaporation
- Three-speed fan
- Although the unit is great, there are a couple of things that bothered me.
- The dehumidifier hose is very short. As a result, you will have to keep the unit close to a window.
It is a great portable AC if you are looking to cool a fairly small room. The bucket less design allows you to run this AC day in and day out. The fan is powerful enough, and the noise is barely registrable. All in all, a great portable AC for a small room.
The next portable AC on or list is the Whynter ARC-14SH. It is one of the most powerful units on this list. The Whynter is a two-in-one system; it is capable of cooling as well as heating. So, you can use this unit during the summers as an AC and the winters as a heater! The unit also features a dual exhaust system making it efficient.
The Whynter is not a very bulky system either, considering that you are getting both heater and an AC. Weighing in at 100 pounds, it is easy to move around on the wheels as well. The unit has a 14,000BTU cooling and a 13,000BTU heating capacity. The power is good enough to cool a 500sq.ft. Room to 61 degrees F in just a few minutes.
I also like the slim profile of the unit. The black and silver accents make it one of the best-looking AC on the market.
The Whynter is a beast when it comes to performance. What makes it unique is the fact that despite the power, the unit is exceptionally energy efficient. I occasionally suffer from allergies, and I like my AC to provide filtered air. So, when I saw that this unit has an activated charcoal filter, I had high hopes. And the unit did not disappoint me. Even during the peak allergy season, the AC supplied, clean filtered air. I couldn't be more pleased with the performance.
The unit comes with a three-speed fan which is sufficient for the room. I especially love the 24-hour programmable timer on the unit. I can program the AC to switch off automatically at a certain time during the night.
The noise is bearable too. Although it is not one of the most silent units on this list, I did not have any major issues.
The installation is very simple as well. There is no complicated assembly or anything of that sort.
- Good design and build quality
- Two-in-one; both cooling and heating system in one device
- No messy installation
- 24-hour timer
- Three-speed fan
I was happy with the overall performance barring a few issues
- The noise is a bit on the louder side
- There is no ambient temperature sensor
Another unit on the list from the reputable name of Whynter, the ARC-10WB is one of the most ecofriendly portable ACs out there. It is one of the best units that I have reviewed in recent past. It is powerful enough for a small room and packs in many great features.
The unit features a good design that is compact and surprisingly light in weight.
As the AC comes with a single hose, you will have to put it next to the window to get the exhaust out.
The 10,000BTU compressor is powerful enough to cool a 400sq.ft. Room with ease. I love the fact that this unit features a self-evaporating technology. You don't have to empty the bucket every often, and you can run this thing for days on end.
The AC has a four-speed fan, which is quite fast at the highest setting. The dehumidifier mode works as expected as well. However, the dehumidification is not super-efficient. It can dehumidify about 55 pints a day. Although it was okay for me. But if you live in exceptionally humid climate, it may not be enough for you.
The air is filtered through an ion filter mechanism. It is a huge plus for me, as I am allergic to a lot of things including pollen and dust.
As the unit is 10,000BTU, it is reasonably silent. The unit consumes 1170W of energy at the maximum cooling rate. It is a great efficiency for a portable AC that is this small.
The installation is simple. It took me less than 10 minutes to put together this unit. The only tricky part is the window attachment for the exhaust hose. It takes a bit of time but is simple enough. You will not need any additional equipment to install the AC.
- Great energy efficiency
- Single hose system with a decent dehumidifier function
- Simple installation
- Silver ion-filter for a cleaner air
- Four-speed fan
The performance of this AC is great. It is powerful enough and requires virtually no Maintenance. However, there are a couple of things that I would have liked to see.
- The noise could have been a bit low, especially as it is a low power unit
- It is costlier, but as it is the most energy-efficient unit on this list, we will let it go!
This little beauty from Black and Decker is one of the smallest ACs in the market. Although it has a cooling capacity of 8,000BTUs, it’s compact size makes it one of my favorites.
The unit features most features of a typical unit in this category. The compact size makes it ideal for a room that is small and crowded. It is incredibly easy to move around as well.
With its 8,000BTU compressor, it is certainly not the most powerful portable ACs out there. But it gets the job done. I have this unit in my guest bedroom that is 12' X 20, ' and this unit is perfect for it.
The AC has three fan-speed that is sufficient for a small room. The AC features self-evaporating technology. No buckets and no need to replace the condensate!
The AC also features a 24-hour timer and a remote controller. There is nothing to install as such. All you need to do is stick the exhaust hose out a window and you are set!
- Small compact design
- Single hose system, bucket-less design
- Easy to install
- Activated carbon filter for cleaner air
- Three-speed fan
The Black and Decker AC is great for a small room. However, due to its compact size, it has a few shortcomings.
- The unit is louder than I would like. But if you are a heavy sleeper, you won’t mind it
Another smaller AC with a compact footprint, the SPT single hose AC is one of the best when it comes to rapid cooling of smaller spaces. It is an excellent unit if you are on a budget. Although it is affordable, it does not lack any key features.
The AC is designed with affordability in mind. The housing is made from fire resistant PVC plastic. It is easy to move from one room the other as well. It is less than 30’’ in length and less than 14’’ in width which makes it an excellent choice for compact spaces.
The AC features an 8,000BTU compressor. It is not very strong, but if you use it in a small room of about 350sq.ft., it is enough. I was able to cool a room in under 10 minutes in mid-May, which is impressive.
The unit features a single hose system and is capable of dehumidification function as well. The unit is self-evaporating and requires no condensate removal.
The large display indicates the temperature and speed. The fan operates at two speeds; low and high. The unit is easy to install as well. The only real installation needed is the exhaust hose.
- Compact design
- Self-evaporating technology
- Easy to install
- Two-speed fan
Although SPT scores great points in most of the areas, there are some drawbacks as well.
- The unit is not as greatly built as some of the others on this list
- There is no specialized filter for cleaning air
Portable air conditioners for a small room are a great option for traditional standard AC. Although these small portable ACs don’t have the power of a full blown central AC system, they have many advantages that make them ideal for certain purposes.
We hope that this guide helped you to narrow down your choice for a good portable AC. The points covered in this guide will help you to evaluate any portable AC. You can’t go wrong in picking any one of our top five choices either! Until next time!
Comparison: Portable AC vs Standard AC
If you want an easy installation
Installing a standard air conditioner can be quite a task. In all probability, you will end up hiring someone just to install it. I remember when I had my first standard AC installed in my house. I had such a horrible experience from setting it up to the actual installation. And then there was the dreaded electrical issue that I didn't even think about. The installation required an additional socket, and I ended up hiring an electrician as well. Long story short, it sucked!
Another factor that you should remember is the room you want to cool itself. If the room is small and has no or very small windows, you will have to put a hole in your wall! Installing an AC can quickly turn into a full-blown construction project.
When it comes to portable ACs, the experience is quite different. There is no ‘installation’ needed at all. All you will need to do is assemble it. Most portable air conditioners I have used did not even require special tools for assembly. The room you want to cool is not even a factor. All you need is a standard electric outlet, and you are good to go.
So, when it comes to ease of installation, the portable ACs are the clear winners.
If you want to move your AC from one room to the other
One of the most frustrating things about conventional ACs is the fact that they are fixed to a location. My window AC is in the living room. It is good for the living room but horrible for inner rooms. It takes hours before my home office is cooled, which is farther away from the living room. Not to mention the waste of energy in cooling an empty living space just to get it to cool the other rooms.
With a portable air conditioner, your cooling is mobile! You can carry the portable air conditioner to any room, however, small and can cool it within minutes.
Most of the Portable ACs have casters and wheels at the bottom, and it is very easy to move them. Whether you have a hardwood floor or a carpeted floor, you won't have a problem.
Some of the portable units are so compact that you can carry them out to camping!
If you are on a budget
You can buy a portable AC at just a fraction of the cost of a standard AC. If you are low on cash and the cost of a regular AC is just too much, a portable AC is a great alternative. Also, the additional cost of setting up a regular AC with professional help, wiring and so on, can be quite a lot.
Everything said a portable AC makes more sense if you are on a budget or just don't want to spend that much on an AC.
So, if you think that a portable AC is a great option for you, the next question is how to go about shopping for one? The problem is not that portable ACs are hard to find, it is that there are so many!
