Keystone KSTAP14A 14,000 BTU

Keystone KSTAP14A 14,000 BTU 115-Volt Portable Air Conditioner with Follow Me LCD Remote Control

Editor Rating:

This seems like a really reliable portable air conditioner when you compare it to some of the other brands you may find out there. It has the ability to cool as much as 700 square feet which is like a regular living room or a boardroom. It can also dehumidify the air for a healthy and comfortable environment. And there is no need for a bucket.

Like most modern portable air conditioners, it has a full function remote so without moving an inch off your couch, you can change the settings and start or stop the unit.

I also found attractive the 5-year warranty which covers repair and spares.

Pros

  • Its 14,000 BTU which can cool 700 square feet
  • The remote has user-friendly controls which makes using it easy
  • It has a programmable timer so it can cool the room according to your schedul
  • It can be put on sleep mode which gradually increases room temperature
  • You have control over the direction of the air flow

Cons

  • It takes up a lot of floor space

Keystone Eco-Friendly 14,000 BTU

If you want a 14000 BTU AC that will take up less floor space, then this one may work well. It can also cool a maximum space of 700 square feet and it has a user-friendly remote to ensure that you can use it easily and change settings without having to get up and walk to the unit itself.

The AC is eco-friendly since no led or ozone-damaging refrigerants are used. There is no need for a bucket as it evaporates moisture.

There is a fan with 3 speeds which can be used when the heat is not so intense and it can save energy as well to run it in this mode.

Pros

  • It takes less floor space in comparison to KSTAP14A
  • You can schedule when it will turn on or off
  • It is able to cool a wide area of 700 square feet- It has a user
  • friendly remote and controls- It is eco
  • friendly and will not destroy the ozone layer

Cons

  • It does not have a heater

Keystone KSTAP12A 12,000 BTU

Keystone KSTAP12A 12,000 BTU

Editor Rating:

If you cannot afford the bigger unit but would like to enjoy similar features, then this may be a good option. It can cool a maximum of 600 square feet which is only 100 less than the 14000 BTU and it costs almost 100 dollars less which I think is a good deal. It also has a turbo mode along with 3 cooling speeds which I find sufficient to cool the room.

There is no need for a bucket since it has a flexible exhaust which will let out the evaporated moisture.

There is a programmable timer so you can set it to turn on even before you get home and even if electricity went off, it would restart with the same settings

Pros

  • It is reasonably priced for an AC with the features it has
  • It has the turbo mode which increases the intensity of the cooling
  • The programmable timer not only helps to cool the place before you get home but also saves energy
  • It can memorize settings and restart when power goes off

Cons

  • The hose is a bit lose and you may need to use duct tape to keep it sealed

Keystone KSTAP10E 10, 000 BTU

Keystone KSTAP10E 10, 000 BTU

Editor Rating:

For a room not exceeding 400 square feet, this could be a good portable AC. It is 10000 BTU which is strong enough for an office or bedroom. In the bedroom, you may have to lower the speed so that the sound it makes does not keep you awake.

I like its design which is unique from the usual Keystone portable ACs. The wheels can be turned in any direction which makes the unit easy to push anywhere with less force.

The flexible hose also makes it easy to adjust the position of the unit without having to remove it from the window.

Pros

  • It is reliable with a strong steady flow of cool air
  • The louvers can be adjusted to direct the airflow where you want it
  • On low, it makes less noise which can enable you to sleep peacefully
  • The exhaust hose is flexible so you can adjust the position of the unit

Cons

  • The remote does not come ready with its own aaa batteries

Keystone KSTAP06D 6, 000 BTU

If you have a home office or reading room that is not bigger than 200 square feet, it is advisable to use this AC since it will not cost so much. It has most of the features that you would need like a fan with 3 speeds, it can save your settings and restart if there is a power cut.

The remote control has a LED display and the same applies to the unit. It weighs just 41.6 pounds and that makes it easy to move it around even if the wheels do not work.

Pros

  • It is lightweight which makes it easy to move it around
  • It can save your settings and if there is a power cut, it will restart with the same settings when it returns
  • It has a 3-speed fan and cooler which gives more choice of intensity
  • It evaporates moisture so there is no need for emptying a bucket often

Cons

  • It takes a while before you can feel the cooling effect

I find the KSTAP14A to be the most effective portable air conditioner since it can also be used in small areas as well as wide ones. Its features are also designed to ensure you have comfort even when it is very hot. If you feel it is too strong or expensive, you can opt for the KSTAP12A which may be cheaper but does not compromise cooling ability. It may work on a smaller area than the 14000 BTU but it is still effective. And for a really small room and if you are on a tight budget, the KSTAP06D with 6000 BTU may be sufficient.

Useful Information You May Need to Know About Portable Air Conditioners

Portable is relative

Many people may hear the word portable and imagine that they are small and very easy to lift. The truth is they are nowhere near as easy to pick and go as a fan. The reason most of them come with wheels is that they can be heavy and bulky so portable, in this case, refers more to the fact that they are movable around.

You need a window outlet

Portable air conditioners come with a window kit, when installing them, you are going to need to have a window near the point where they will be. Unlike the huge air conditioners though, installation is a lot easier and takes a much shorter time.

They can be noisy

It is good to prepare yourself for a certain degree of noise. You need to realize that the air conditioner is right there in the room so as everything goes on, there will be noise. The degree of noise though may vary according to model and some will not make too much noise so you can still sleep or watch TV and have a conversation even while it is on.

They are not as strong as window units

When you compare a portable air conditioner’s BTU with the same one of a window unit, you will realize that the cooling effect may not be the same, the window unit with the same BTU may cool a wider area than the portable one. However, they all can do a good job so you do not need to worry much about that.

Why You Should Buy a Portable Air Conditioner

If you are still undecided whether to choose a portable one or the big window unit, here are a few reasons to purchase one of these units on this list.

Simple Installation: Portable units are designed to be used in different places so the installation is quick and easy. You will not need to call a technician or to break part of the wall to install this. In about 5 minutes, you can have it ready to start working.

Cheaper cost: In comparison to the central air conditioning, portable units are cheaper which saves you the cost but allows you a comfortable environment during summer. There is even no installation cost involved since like I stated before, installation is simple and you can do it yourself.

Portability: There is no reason to cool a room that you are not using, which is what a central system would do but with this one, you can move it to the room you want to cool and if you have an RV, you can also carry it in there. It is quite convenient.

Energy efficiency: Portable air conditioners use a significantly lower amount of energy since they cool just one room at a time and they have features like the timer that can also save energy.

What to Consider When Buying a Portable Air Conditioner

BTU

The BTU is one of the most important features to look out for because it gives you an insight into the cooling strength of the air conditioner. The higher the BTU, the wider the area it can cool. Now a BTU of 8,000, can cool as much as 200 sq feet while 10,000BTU will cool 300sq ft. 12,000BTU will cool 400sq ft and so on.Power CordThe length of a power cord is important in relation to the positioning of the sockets in the house and where you would like to position the air conditioner. Unlike other appliances which you can add an extension cable to, most manufacturers will warn you against this when it comes to portable air conditioners. They tend to take up a lot of power so an extension cable may be overloaded. It is important therefore to ensure the cable is the right length.

Noise

Think of the things you will be engaging in while the conditioner is running, sometimes you may be reading, conversing, sleeping or watching TV. You do not want the noise from the unit to stop you from going about your life, it is important therefore to ensure that the noise level is tolerable.

Timers

This is a convenience feature that can save you power bills as well as ensure that you come home to an already conditioned room. Units with on-off timers can be programmed to turn on at a certain time so that even when you are away from home, it can start running so that you find the room cool and if you are forgetful, you do not have to worry that you left it running because at a certain time it will turn itself off and that saves you money.

Remote control

Here is another convenience feature, just like you find a remote control for the TV to be convenient, the air conditioner remote will save you a trip to the unit whenever you wish to adjust the temperature or the cooling speed.

Window Kit

The window kit comes with a filler panel to close the gap of the opened window which is created by the exhaust hose that directs hot air outside.
